Whatever the cause of the detail and sharpness boost, though, and while the extent of the detail improvement can be a bit inconsistent, it’s definitely there. Or maybe it’s just that the picture streams off the 4K BD at a consistently very high bit rate - almost always over 50Mbps, and often between 70 and 100Mbps. Maybe it’s down to something very clever being done by EFilm, the digital lab largely responsible for the cinematic Despicable Me 3 digital intermediate. I’m not fully clear on how this apparent extra clarity and detail is possible given what I thought I knew about the current state of animation rendering technology. You can also see textures in the minions’ overalls during closeups (such as their performance at the Sing auditions) that aren’t apparent on the HD release. The stunning delineation of colors, edges and detail is just as important to the sense of depth in those Gru domestic interiors, for instance. Despite it only being granted a 2K digital intermediate for its cinematic release, the 4K image that’s presumably been derived from that 2K master really does look remarkably sharp and detailed at times. The shots shots in and around Gru’s home, in particular, look incredible.ĭespicable Me 3’s dazzling visual experience isn’t built solely on its gleaming HDR efforts. It’s also used beautifully to enhance darker interior shots, defining a sense of space and creating a mesmerizing, three-dimensional depth no other animated 4K title can match. It’s not just with the bright and shiny stuff that HDR makes its mark, though. This means that instead of the brightest colors looking a bit thin as can sometimes happen with HDR animation, here the brightness just feels like it’s unlocking a whole, gorgeous new colorscape. What’s really great about DM3’s extra HDR brightness, though, is that unlike one or two other aggressively HDR animated titles, the master is equally aggressive with its dialing up of the color gamut.
